Anthropic Passes OpenAI in US Business Adoption — 34.4% vs 32.3%
More American businesses are now paying for Anthropic’s Claude than for OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Anthropic’s US business adoption rate: 34.4%. OpenAI’s: 32.3%.
That is the first time Anthropic has held the top position since both products launched commercial tiers.
The Numbers Behind the Shift
Anthropic quadrupled its business adoption over the past year. OpenAI grew its business adoption by 0.3% in the same period.
That is not a close race. One company is adding enterprise customers at a pace the other cannot match.
Why Businesses Are Choosing Claude
The pattern in enterprise adoption points to a few consistent factors: Claude’s performance on long-context tasks, its reliability in coding workflows, and — increasingly — its reputation for producing output that requires less human editing before it ships.
Enterprise buyers are not choosing AI tools based on benchmark scores. They are choosing based on what reduces friction in their actual workflows. Claude appears to be winning that comparison in a significant segment of the market.
What This Means for OpenAI
OpenAI still leads in consumer adoption and brand recognition. ChatGPT remains the most-used AI product by individual users globally. But the enterprise market — where contract values are larger and churn is lower — has moved.
The IPO timing is relevant here. OpenAI filing for a public listing at a $1 trillion valuation while its enterprise market share is declining is a narrative problem the company will need to address in its S-1.
