Before getting into feature-by-feature results, you need to understand something that’s buried in the docs and missing from most reviews: the free plan has three separate credit pools.

Here’s the breakdown from my testing session, starting at roughly 3,604 main credits:

The biggest surprise: Studio consumed credits just from importing a URL, before I even clicked Generate. I imported a real article from mrreviewai.com and ElevenLabs pre-calculated the audio at 18 minutes and 17 seconds. Generating that full narration would have cost roughly 18,000+ credits — nearly two full months of free plan credits for a single article.
Text to Speech
The core feature, and the one most people come for.
The free plan gives you access to the full voice library. I tested several voices including the popular preset voices and the quality is genuinely impressive — better than any free TTS I’ve used from Google or Amazon. The prosody (rhythm and emphasis) feels natural on longer paragraphs in a way that generic TTS doesn’t.
Credit math: At roughly 1 credit per character, a 500-word blog post introduction (~2,500 characters) costs around 2,500 credits — a quarter of your monthly free allowance. A full 1,500-word article would consume most of your monthly credits in a single generation.
What the free plan limits: No commercial license. You can’t publish audio generated on the free plan for monetized content. If you want to narrate your blog posts and monetize them, you’re looking at the paid plan.

I generated the same script using three different ElevenLabs models — all on the free plan, all with the Roger voice. Here’s how they sound:

Sound Effects
This feature surprised me. You describe a sound in plain Englishand ElevenLabs generates it from scratch.
I tested a few prompts — typing keyboard sounds, notification chimes, ambient coffee shop background — and got 4 variants per generation. Each generation costs 200 credits.
The quality is usable for YouTube videos, podcasts, and social content. Not every generation is a winner, but getting 4 options at once makes it likely you’ll find something workable in 1–2 attempts.
Credit math: 200 credits per generation (4 variants). With 10,000 monthly credits, you could generate 50 unique sound effect sets — though Mr Review AI’s June 2026 retest confirmed Sound Effects now costs just 50 credits per generation (a 75% drop), meaning you can generate 200 sets per month — more than enough for a serious content project.
This is one of the few free plan features where the credit cost feels reasonable relative to what you get.
Music Generation
ElevenLabs can generate original background music from text descriptions. Think: “calm ambient music for a YouTube video intro, no lyrics, 30 seconds.”
The catch: Minimum generation is 30 seconds, and each 30-second track costs 450 credits per variant. That’s 900 credits per minute of audio.
I generated one 30-second track at 1 variant to conserve credits. The result was usable background music — not cinematic quality, but better than royalty-free stock music you’d find on free sites.
Credit math: At 900 credits per minute, you can generate roughly 11 minutes of music per month on the free plan. For a podcast or video channel needing 3–5 minutes of intro/outro music total, that could actually cover you. For anything more intensive, the math gets tight quickly.
Voice Design
This is one of ElevenLabs’ more interesting free features. You describe a voice — age, accent, gender, tone, speaking style — and the system generates it from scratch. You get 3 variants per generation for 350 credits.
I built a custom voice for testing: described as a professional American male in his mid-30s, clear and authoritative, moderate pace. The system returned three distinct options — they weren’t identical, each had noticeable character differences.
You can audition all three, select the one you want, name it, and save it to your voice library. That voice then becomes available in TTS just like any other voice.
The caveat: During my testing I encountered server-side generation failures — the system returned errors on some Voice Design attempts before succeeding. This appears to be a capacity issue on ElevenLabs’ end, not a user error. It resolved after retrying.
Studio (AI Narration)

One detail that matters for planning: ElevenLabs shows an upgrade prompt when your main credits drop to approximately 24% remaining (around 2,400 credits on a 10,000 credit plan).

Update June 8, 2026 — I Retested the Free Plan: Here’s What Changed in 2 Weeks
I created a brand-new ElevenLabs account on June 8, 2026 to verify what’s changed since the original review on May 24. Screenshots are from this fresh account with 10,000 credits — zero used. Three significant changes, one pricing promotion, and two model upgrades that affect free plan users directly.
Change #1 — Biggest: Instant Voice Cloning Is Now Free
The original review stated clearly: “Voice Cloning: No — Starter+ required.” That’s no longer accurate as of June 8, 2026.
When I went to My Voices → Create a voice on the new free account, the interface showed three options without any lock or paywall: Voice Design (always free), Instant Voice Clone — “Clone your voice with only 10 seconds of audio,” and Professional Voice Clone (still Creator plan+ only). I clicked through to the Instant Voice Clone flow and the upload interface appeared fully — no upgrade prompt, no paywall.
This is a meaningful change. If you previously skipped ElevenLabs because voice cloning required a paid plan, that barrier is now gone. The free plan limit remains 3 total voices (Voice Design + Voice Clone combined).
Change #2: Sound Effects Dropped from 200 Credits to 50 Credits Per Generation
The original review recorded Sound Effects at 200 credits per generation (4 variants). The Sound Effects interface on June 8 shows 50 credits per generation — a 75% reduction in credit cost.
In practical terms: with 10,000 monthly free credits you can now generate up to 200 Sound Effects per month instead of 50. The Sound Effects page also has a redesigned UI — category browser with visual cards (Animals, Bass, Booms, Braams, Brass, Cymbals and more), an Explore tab showing community generations, Looping and Duration filters, and a Favorites tab. None of these existed in the May 24 interface.
Note on variants: I could not confirm in a single session whether the new 50-credit generation returns 1 or 4 variants. The original 200-credit generation returned 4. Worth testing in your own account before assuming you’re getting 4x more output.
Change #3: Three New TTS Models Added — Including Eleven v3
When the original review was published, Eleven Multilingual v2 was the primary model worth using. On June 8, the model selector shows five options available to free plan users:
Eleven v3 — “The most expressive model. Supports 70+ languages. 🆕 Update: June 25, 2026 — Studio 3.0, Templates, Voice Changer & What’s New
Last verified: June 25, 2026 — Checked live inside the ElevenLabs dashboard (Free Plan account) and pricing page.
I went back into ElevenLabs today to check what’s changed since the June 8, 2026 update. Here’s what I found, verified on the live dashboard — no guessing from press releases.
1. Studio 3.0 — Now with Video Support
The biggest product change since the last update: Studio has been upgraded to Studio 3.0. The banner inside the dashboard now reads: “Voiceovers, Eleven Music and SFX in one editor — now with video support.”
What this means practically: Studio is no longer just an audio narration tool. You can now combine voiceovers, background music, and sound effects — and export with video — all inside one editor. This is a meaningful expansion of what “Studio” means. The free plan still limits you to 3 Studio projects, but the feature surface inside those 3 projects has grown.
2. Templates — New Feature (Beta)
A brand new Templates section appeared in the sidebar with a “New” badge. It’s a library of visual content templates — product mockups, brand promos, video styles — organised by category (Mockups, Product/Business Promos, and more). This extends ElevenLabs from an audio-first platform into a broader content creation suite.
Honest take: Templates are primarily image/video templates, not voice templates. If you came to ElevenLabs for TTS or voice cloning, this won’t change your workflow. But it signals clearly where ElevenLabs is heading — away from “AI voice tool” and toward “AI content platform.”
3. Voice Changer — In Sidebar, Not Yet Live
A Voice Changer option appeared in the sidebar’s Pinned section. When I navigated to the URL directly, it returned a 404 “Page not found” error. The feature is visible in the menu but hasn’t fully rolled out yet as of June 25, 2026.
I’ll update this section when Voice Changer goes live. Based on the positioning, it will likely allow real-time or recorded audio to be converted into any voice in the ElevenLabs library — similar to what tools like Voicemod offer, but with ElevenLabs’ voice quality.

ElevenLabs is now actively pushing Eleven v3 in the TTS interface — a banner appears directly in the model selector saying “Eleven v3 is here” with a “Try Eleven v3” button. The model itself was already covered in the June 8 update, but the prominent placement signals ElevenLabs considers v3 their primary model now.
5. Free Plan Credits — Current Status
Checked the account balance June 25, 2026: 4,465 credits remaining on the free plan (out of 10,000/month). The core free plan numbers remain unchanged — 10,000 TTS credits/month, 60,000 Voice Isolator credits (separate pool), no commercial license, 3 Studio projects.
What Hasn’t Changed
The June 8 findings all still hold: Instant Voice Cloning is free, Sound Effects at 50 credits/generation, Eleven v3 available on free, Music v2 model active, 9 MCP prompt templates (Creator/Pro required to connect). The core verdict is unchanged: free plan is for evaluation, not production. The no-commercial-license limit hasn’t moved.
