beehiiv Free Plan Review 2026: Tested Hands-On — What’s Actually Free (And What’s Not)
- ✓2,500 free subscribers
- ✓Unlimited email sends
- ✓Email + website publish together
- ✓Recommendation Network (free)
- ✓Full automation builder access
- ✕Cannot activate automations on free
- ✕No custom domain without Scale ($49/mo)
- ✕Ad Network requires Scale
- ✕Monetization locked on free
Bottom line upfront: beehiiv’s free plan (called “Launch”) gives you 2,500 subscribers, unlimited sends, a built-in website, a full automation builder, API access (excluding Send API), and beehiiv MCP read access — all for $0/month. Note: Ad Network requires Scale plan. The one real wall: automations can be built but not activated without upgrading. For a newsletter-focused creator starting from zero, it’s the most generous free tier I’ve tested. Score: 8.2/10.

What We Tested
We signed up for beehiiv’s free Launch plan and tested every section of the dashboard: newsletter editor, automation builder, website builder, subscriber management, forms, and monetization. This is a hands-on account review — not a features list copied from their pricing page.
Account name: Mr. Review Ai — reviewaisaas.beehiiv.com (live). Test date: June 21, 2026. Subscribers at time of test: 3 active. Posts published: 0 (drafts only). Sends: 0. Plan: Launch (free, $0/month).
beehiiv Dashboard — What You See on Day One
The dashboard shows four core metrics immediately: Active subscribers, Open rate, Click-to-open rate, and Earnings. On a new account, all four show zero — but the layout makes it clear what you’re building toward. No dark patterns, no upsell banners covering the workspace.
Top bar shows your plan status at all times: “Launch plan — 3 / 2,500 subs” with an Upgrade button. You always know where you stand against the free limit.

Newsletter Editor — The Best Part of beehiiv Free
The editor is where beehiiv separates itself. It’s a clean, Notion-style block editor with a 5-step publishing workflow: Compose → Audience → Email → Web → Review. You write once and publish to both email and your web archive simultaneously — something no other free email tool does by default.
Type / to access blocks: headings, images, polls, dividers, callouts, embeds, buttons. The Style panel (right sidebar) gives real-time email preview with full color customization — background, text, primary, secondary colors all editable on free.
One detail worth noting: the author byline shows the real account name (“NGUYEN VAN HUNG”) automatically. No manual setup needed. This matters for E-E-A-T if you’re building a personal brand newsletter.
The Audience step shows exactly who will receive the post — by tier and segment. The Email step lets you customize subject line, preview text, and toggle social sharing buttons and Likes & Comments. These are available on the free plan.

Automations — Bigger Than Expected, But With One Hard Wall
This is the section that surprised us most — and where most beehiiv free plan reviews get it wrong.

The common claim: “automations are locked on free.” The reality: the automation builder is fully accessible. You can create, configure, and save automations. The wall is activation — you can’t publish automations live without a Scale plan.
Here’s what’s actually available in the builder on free:
Triggers (all accessible on free)
Subscription events: Signed up, Email submitted, Survey submitted, Poll submitted, Referral action, Segment action. Monetize events: Upgraded, Downgraded, Product purchased. Other: Added by API, Manual, Unengaged.
Actions (all accessible on free)
Messages: Send email. Data: Update subscription, Send webhook. Delays: Wait until, Time delay. Flow control: True/false branch, Multi-split branch, Random cohort branch (A/B testing inside automations), Enroll in automation, Exit automation.
For context: Brevo free plan limits you to 1 active automation. MailerLite free has automations. Kit.com free has no automations at all. Mailchimp free has no automations. beehiiv’s builder — even though you can’t activate — is more sophisticated than what most tools offer on paid plans.
The honest verdict on automations: If you need a welcome email sequence from day one, you’ll hit the wall immediately. A banner inside the workflow editor says clearly: “Upgrade to Scale plan to activate.” No surprise charges — you have to explicitly click Upgrade. But the limitation is real and it stings, because welcome emails typically get 50–80% open rates vs 20–30% for regular sends. This is the one feature that creates a legitimate reason to upgrade early.

Website Builder — A Real Website, Not Just a Landing Page
beehiiv gives every account a live website at yourname.beehiiv.com. This isn’t a single landing page — it’s a full multi-page site with a blog archive of all your posts.
Our test account (reviewaisaas.beehiiv.com) has been live for 2 months with 5 published pages and 2 draft pages. The Website section in the dashboard shows: domain status (LIVE), published date, page count, and SEO preview.
The website builder offers three templates: Link in bio (simple landing page), Simple blog (blog + newsletter archive), and News site (comprehensive content site). All three are available on free.
What’s locked on free: advanced widgets and custom pages beyond the defaults (note: custom domain is now FREE on Launch plan since 2026), advanced widgets, and custom pages beyond the defaults. Custom domain is FREE on the Launch plan (available since 2026 — verified July 1, 2026). If you’re building a personal brand, this is the second real limitation after automations.
What makes this valuable: every newsletter post you publish automatically becomes a public URL. So your newsletter is also a searchable blog — without any extra setup. This is free organic traffic potential that no other tool in this comparison offers on the free tier.

Subscribe Forms — Embeddable on External Sites
beehiiv’s subscribe forms can be embedded on any external website — including WordPress, Webflow, Squarespace, or a custom site. This is how you grow your beehiiv newsletter from your own website without sending people to a separate beehiiv landing page.
Our account has 2 subscribe forms already created. The forms section notes clearly: “These subscribe forms are designed to be embedded on external websites. They won’t work correctly inside beehiiv website pages — use the Subscribe form block in the website builder’s insert panel for on-site signups.”
Both form types are available on free. No lock icons, no upgrade prompts in this section.

Custom Fields — Free on Launch Plan ✅
beehiiv gives you custom subscriber fields on the free plan — no upgrade needed. We found First Name and Last Name pre-built by default, and you can create more via the “+ Create custom field” button. This lets you personalize emails and segment subscribers from day one, even on the free tier.

Monetization — What’s Free, What’s Locked
beehiiv markets itself as a platform where you can earn before you pay them. Here’s the honest breakdown of what that actually means on the free plan.
Ad Network — Scale plan only 🔒
The Ad Network (earn CPC or CPM from pre-negotiated brand ads) requires upgrading to Scale. The page says clearly: “Upgrade to Scale plan” with a banner across the top. We couldn’t access any ad offers on free.
Note: earlier versions of beehiiv did include Ad Network on free. Based on what we saw on June 21, 2026, it now requires Scale. If you’ve read older reviews saying it’s free — that may have changed.
Boosts — Browse free, earn/pay requires Scale ⚠️
Boosts let you earn per subscriber you refer to other newsletters (and pay others to send subscribers to you). On free, you can browse the Boosts Marketplace — see available offers, filter by niche, and view payout rates. What’s locked: you can’t activate earnings or set up payments without upgrading to Scale. So the discovery layer is free; the transaction layer is not. The page banner says: “Upgrade to Scale plan” when you try to participate.

Recommendation Network — Free ✅
The Recommendation Network (cross-promotion between newsletters — you recommend others, others recommend you) is available on free. No payment per subscriber. This is the organic growth engine on the free plan.
Paid Subscriptions / Paywalls — Scale plan only 🔒
You can’t charge readers for premium content on the free plan. Paid tiers, paywalls, and premium newsletter content all require Scale.
Digital Products — Scale plan only 🔒
The Products section appears in the sidebar on free. You can connect Stripe and explore the setup. But publishing and selling digital products requires Scale. Dashboard confirmed June 26, 2026: “Publishing products is part of the Scale plan.”

beehiiv Free Plan vs The Competition — Real Comparison
We’ve tested Brevo, MailerLite, Kit.com, and Mailchimp on their free plans in June 2026 (see our full free email marketing tools comparison). Here’s how beehiiv stacks up:
| Feature | beehiiv | Brevo | MailerLite | Kit.com | Mailchimp |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free subscribers | 2,500 | Unlimited | 250 (drops July 1, 2026) | 10,000 | 500 |
| Free sends | Unlimited | 300/day | 12,000/month | Unlimited | 1,000/month |
| Automations | Builder only (no activate) | 1 active | ✅ Full | ❌ Locked | ❌ Locked |
| Built-in website | ✅ | ❌ | ❌ | ✅ | ❌ |
| Email + Web publish | ✅ | ❌ | ❌ | ❌ | ❌ |
| Embeddable forms | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ❌ (locked) | ✅ |
| Branding on free | “Powered by beehiiv” | Brevo logo | MailerLite logo | Kit logo | Mailchimp logo |
| Monetization (free) | Rec. Network only | ❌ | ❌ | ❌ | ❌ |
| Best for | Newsletter creators | Transactional + CRM | Small businesses | Creators (big list) | E-commerce |
Key insight: beehiiv is not a direct competitor to Brevo or Mailchimp. Those tools are built for sending marketing emails to a list. beehiiv is built for newsletter publishing — where your email is also your blog, your website, and potentially your revenue stream. Different use case, different audience.
beehiiv Free Plan Pricing — The Full Picture (Launch, Scale, Max, Enterprise)
The free Launch plan is genuinely free — no credit card required, no time limit. You stay on free until you hit 2,500 active subscribers. At that point, beehiiv presents you with the Scale plan upgrade.
beehiiv now has 4 tiers: Launch (free), Scale, Max, and Enterprise. Scale plan pricing scales with your list size (pulled directly from the dashboard upgrade modal, June 2026):
- Up to 1,000 subscribers: $49/month (or $43/month annual)
- Up to 2,500 subscribers: $69/month (or $61/month annual)
- Up to 5,000 subscribers: $89/month (or $78/month annual)
- Up to 10,000 subscribers: $109/month (or $96/month annual)
- Up to 25,000 subscribers: $169/month (or $149/month annual)
- Up to 50,000 subscribers: $249/month (or $219/month annual)

Annual billing saves ~12% but requires upfront commitment. For a beginner, start monthly — only switch annual after 6+ months of consistent sending.Max plan starts at $109/month and adds: audio newsletters, AI social helper, direct sponsorships, dynamic content, ability to remove beehiiv branding, up to 10 publications, unlimited teammates, and priority support. It’s built for serious newsletter businesses, not beginners.
The honest math on free vs paid: beehiiv’s free plan is generous because the paid plans are real money at scale. Once you cross 2,500 subscribers, migrating your list away from beehiiv is disruptive (you’d need to re-import to another tool and hope subscribers re-confirm). They know this. The free tier is designed to get you building on their platform before the costs become real.
Who Should Use beehiiv Free
Use beehiiv free if: You’re starting a newsletter from scratch and want email + web publishing in one place. You’re a creator, blogger, or writer who wants your newsletter to also function as a public blog. You can live without automated welcome emails for now (or budget $49/month when you’re ready). You want to grow through cross-promotion via the Recommendation Network without paying per subscriber.
Don’t use beehiiv free if: You need automated welcome email sequences from day one (use MailerLite free instead — full automations included). You need transactional emails or CRM features (use Brevo). You already have 1,000+ subscribers and need automations running immediately (upgrade to Scale or switch tools). You need a custom domain on free (beehiiv now offers this FREE on the Launch plan (updated 2026)).

Our Verdict
beehiiv’s free Launch plan earns its reputation as the most generous newsletter free tier available in 2026. The 2,500 subscriber limit with unlimited sends is genuinely useful — not a teaser. The website builder, embeddable forms, and Recommendation Network add real value that email-only tools don’t offer.
The automation wall is real and stings specifically because welcome emails are where the most open rate potential lives. If that’s your priority from day one, factor the $49/month Scale cost into your planning from the start.
For a newsletter creator building from zero who can work around the automation limit — beehiiv free is hard to beat. For a business wanting full automation on day one with zero budget, MailerLite free is the better choice.
